Chess coaching · New York

The biggest threat to your child's chess
isn't their opponent.
It's the ride home.

I coach the student and give parents a clear framework for how to actually help — because pressure at home undoes everything we build at the board.

Trained by a Grandmaster.
Focused on the long game.

I'm Elijah Gerson. I'm 15 years old, nationally ranked in my age group, and have spent nearly a decade training under Grandmaster Maxim Dlugy — one of the world's most respected coaches.

I've never lost a school chess tournament. My bullet rating sits in the top 0.1% on Chess.com. But more important than any of those numbers is what I've learned about how serious chess is actually taught — and how most kids never get access to that level of instruction.

My lessons aren't about memorizing openings. They're about building the thinking patterns that let a player improve for the rest of their life.

Four principles that drive every session

01

No pressure. Ever.

Talented kids quit chess because the stakes feel personal. I create an environment where losing a game is the most valuable thing that can happen — and I help parents understand how to reinforce that at home.

02

Patterns over memorization

Opening theory is forgettable. Pattern recognition is permanent. Students learn to see the board the way strong players see it — by exposure to the shapes and structures that repeat at every level.

03

Fundamentals before tactics

Most youth coaching jumps straight to tactics puzzles. We build the conceptual foundation first — piece activity, pawn structure, king safety — so that tactics make intuitive sense rather than feeling like tricks.

04

Clear progress every session

Every lesson ends with a specific concept your child understands better than when they walked in. Parents always know what we worked on and what to look for in their next game.

One lesson. No risk.
